High speed steels (abbreviated HSS),a sub-branch of tool steels, commonly used in tool bits and cutting tools, HSS are ferrous based alloys of the Fe–C–X multicomponent system where X represents a group of alloying elements comprising mainly Cr, W or Mo, V, and Co. since they are characterized by their capacity to retain a high level of hardness (above HRC60) while cutting metals at high speed. Generally, the X component is present in excess of 7%, along with more than 0.60% carbon.
To increase the service life of high speed steel, tools are sometimes coated. One such coating is TiN (titanium nitride). Most coatings generally increase a tool's hardness. A coating allows the cutting edge of a tool to cleanly pass through the material without having the material stick to it. The coating also helps to decrease the temperature associated with the cutting process and increase the service life of the tools.
High speed steels are generally widely used in the field of machining at high speeds. With the excellent abrasion resistance, high temperature properties and excellent hardness, high speed steels (HSS) have become material a wide range of applications including cutting tools, such as drills, taps, milling cutters, tool bits, gear cutters, saw blades, and rolls, such as hot strip mill finishing train, rod and bar mill finishing, and universal mill finishing.
High speed steels also found a market in fine hand tools where their relatively fine toughness at high hardness, coupled with high abrasion resistance, made them suitable for low speed applications requiring a durable edge, such as chisels, hand plane, blades, and high quality kitchen hardware, pocket knives, and swords.
Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will differ due to factors such as the form and actual size of each high speed steel component.
